Talk about the American dream: Sofia\n Kaman Fine Jewels<\/a> started from Sofia Kaman\u2019s one-bedroom apartment and now has a Los Angeles store and a website\n that caters to customers around the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, Sofia started making jewelry simply for fun. In 2001, she had just married her husband, Geoff Kaman, who\n encouraged Sofia to launch her own business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI had been furiously designing jewelry as a hobby,\u201d Sofia recalls. \u201cHe pushed me and said you should do\n this. My passion went from a hobby to\n working<\/a> in a jewelry store to working on my own collection. We started the business from a wholesale line\n and grew it over the last 19 years and turned it into a retail store. Our website was always a part of it and grew\n with us organically over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though their web business has become a\n dominant avenue<\/a> for Sofia Kaman Fine Jewels, their creative home is their building in Santa Monica. It\n houses their showroom, office, design space, and even their marketing and photoshoots are done there. In addition to\n showing their own collection, they also showcase antique and vintage jewelry. Everything is designed by Sofia\n and locally produced in Los\n Angeles<\/a> by their team of artisans. Having the line made locally is a key part of its sustainability\n mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A cornerstone of Sofia Kaman Fine Jewels is their commitment to using sustainable materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely been a passion of mine since the beginning to figure out ways to be more and more sustainable,\u201d\n Sofia says. \u201cIn this day and age, it\u2019s not a question of can you be sustainable, but how<\/em> can you be\n \u2014 what are the ways and how much. There is mining involved in the jewelry business, so it has a big impact on the\n earth. Loving and respecting nature \u2014 that\u2019s so much of an inspiration for the designs and the motif \u2014 and being\n sustainable goes hand in hand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They offer a range of green opportunities for clients, from lab-grown diamonds to small scale mined gemstones to\n antique diamonds repurposed into new pieces. Being more green is their ongoing goal, which is why they are on the hunt\n for more eco-friendly packaging. They use recycled gold whenever casting their own work, and they\u2019re also looking into\n gold that has been ethically mined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFair mining impacts economics and communities,\u201d Geoff says. \u201cThose people live a hard life and don\u2019t get much back.\n It\u2019s difficult because we\u2019re a half a world away from them, but we figure out how to give back to them. We\u2019re looking\n for an ongoing process to find new ways to make our jewelry sustainable. Sustainability and luxury don\u2019t really go\n hand in hand. That\u2019s the combination we are trying to define.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sofia Kaman Fine Jewels showcases jewelry beyond the pieces made in their studio. \u201cGeoff and I travel and source from\n all over the world,\u201d Sofia says. \u201cOur focus is on wedding and engagement, with vintage pieces too. We have a little\n bit of everything. One of the terms I use to describe our aesthetic is \u201cbohemian elegant.\u201d It\u2019s very inspired by\n nature and has a bit of a vintage influence. My passions always come through in my own designs. Our own collection is\n antique and modern combined \u2014 it\u2019s very textural.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
