His obligatory answer: the weather. Can\u2019t beat 284 days of sunshine or\n  the balmy year-round temps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut more than that, it\u2019s the variety of things to do and the diversity of people and cultures that make up our\n  city,\u201d Brian says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe physical geography of Los Angeles plays a big role in how it has evolved over the course of its history. It\u2019s\n    big. It\u2019s spread out. The topography and climate change as you move further inland. Neighborhoods are built out\n    instead of up. Some people see that as a drawback, but I think it\u2019s a strength. The pockets of community and culture\n    that have grown amidst the sprawl are what make Los Angeles unique.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>An Orange County native, Brian moved to L.A. for a job in digital marketing. Once he started dating Christina \u2014 who\n  was born in the San Gabriel Valley and lived in L.A. County her whole life \u2014 he was pushed to get to know Los Angeles\n  as they explored the city together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think I fell in love with L.A. as I fell in love with my wife,\u201d Brian says. Photo by Diana Kuo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Their posts on their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/welikela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WeLikeLA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Facebook<\/a>&nbsp;accounts gained traction quickly. \u201cOf course this was back in the days when\n  organic growth on Facebook was actually possible, versus the pay-to-play dynamic of today,\u201d Brian says. \u201cIt got taken\n  to a whole new level when we started developing our own web content.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They moved from snapshots of their adventures to a blog, compiling lists of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/customer-spotlight-museum-hack\/\">free museum days<\/a>, L.A. neighborhood\n  guides, and other events and free things to do in the city. Basically, they built anything they thought might be\n  useful, figuring that others might also be interested. Creating these how-tos and guides to the city they loved drew\n  in the clicks and provided the first hints that they had hit on something big.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA few of our articles went viral on Facebook \u2014 thousands of shares, hundreds of comments \u2014 and that really\n  fast-tracked our readership growth,\u201d Brian says. \u201cWe went from having a few thousand people reading the blog to\n  literally hundreds of thousands of monthly readers after just a few months. We\u2019ve been able to keep up that level of\n  traffic ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/beginners-guide-to-marketing-your-website-increasing-traffic\/\">The Beginner\u2019s\n    Guide to Marketing Your Website and Increasing Traffic<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bread and Butter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Millions of tourists from around the world&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/customer-spotlight-chado-urasenke-la\/\">flock to Los Angeles<\/a>&nbsp;each year \u2014 and\n  you can bet most of them are Googling \u201cWhat to do in L.A.?\u201d While search results may bring tourists to the We Like\n  L.A. website and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/welikela\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube\n    channel<\/a>&nbsp;and help them plan unique trips that bring them to the center of the city\u2019s unique culture, Brian and\n  Christina create their content with a different audience in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur bread and butter are things to do in L.A.,\u201d Brian says. \u201cBut we aim to create content that\u2019s going to appeal to\n  people that actually live here, whether it\u2019s peeling back the layers behind a unique landmark or point of interest or\n  writing guides that help&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.welikela.com\/fundamental-errors-transplants-los-angeles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent transplants get acclimated to L.A.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their goal is to help fellow locals \u2014 especially new residents \u2014 fall in love with the city, providing guides such as\n  a list of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.welikela.com\/fundamental-errors-transplants-los-angeles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five hikes<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.welikela.com\/first-year-living-in-los-angeles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">21 things<\/a>&nbsp;to do during your first year in L.A. The foundation of their\n  work (and what the blog is most known for) is an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/how-to-create-an-email-newsletter\/\">emailed newsletter<\/a>&nbsp;with a list of\n  what\u2019s going on in L.A. It goes out (and on the blog) every Monday and Thursday with a guide for what to do over the\n  next week or weekend. \u201cWe have about 67,000 subscribers to that service,\u201d Brian says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"article-newsletter article-newsletter--gradient\">\n\n\n\n<form class=\"nwsl-form\" id=\"newsletter_article_single_\" novalidate><div class=\"messages\"><\/div><div class=\"form-group\"><label for=\"input_newsletter_article_single_\"><input type=\"email\"name=\"email\"id=\"input_newsletter_article_single_\"placeholder=\"Enter your email address\"novalidatedisabled=\"disabled\"\/><\/label><button type=\"submit\"class=\"btn btn--brand\"disabled=\"disabled\"><span>Sign Me Up!<\/span><\/button><\/div><\/form><\/div>\n\n\n<p>To track down information for their website and newsletter content, \u201cat first we were literally just picking random\n  things or restaurants that we thought seemed interesting,\u201d Brian says. \u201cChristina was a huge help here, because she\u2019d\n  grown up reading&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.welikela.com\/jonathan-gold-helped-me-fall-in-love-with-my-own-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jonathan Gold in the LA Weekly<\/a>, following his recommendations, and\n  then developing her own sense of what was good and what wasn\u2019t. Her taste in food is impeccable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brian\u2019s strength? Finding the freebies. \u201cSince I\u2019m a total cheapskate, I was always focused on finding free stuff to\n  do,\u201d he says. \u201cPeople seem to appreciate that, though.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As their audience and notoriety grew, people started reaching out to We Like L.A. with ideas for restaurants to check\n  out and details about pop-ups, art walks, festivals, and more. Today they have an entire email account (<a href=\"mailto:tips@welikela.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tips@welikela.com<\/a>) dedicated to\n  collecting tips and announcements, and it\u2019s flooded every day with pitches, requests for coverage, and news releases.\n  Even with the time it takes to sift through and follow up on these tips, Christina and Brian still make it out into\n  the city to do some on-the-street exploring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStill, sometimes our best discoveries are just when we happen to be walking a neighborhood and spot something\n  interesting,\u201d Brian says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/website-owners-guide-to-email-marketing\/\">The\n    Website Owner\u2019s Guide to Email Marketing<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building an Audience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Building an audience doesn\u2019t happen overnight. \u201cAnd converting an audience into an actual business model takes even\n  longer,\u201d Brian says. \u201cBut if you believe in what you\u2019re doing, and you\u2019re willing to try and fail many times over,\n  eventually you figure it out. I wouldn\u2019t say we have it all figured out yet, but the progress from day one to now is\n  pretty remarkable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As their personal project evolved into a bigger undertaking \u2014 one that could actually make money \u2014 he and Christina,\n  whose professional background is in public relations, found themselves learning about business best practices on the\n  fly. Their combined experience in PR and marketing were a big help, but learning how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/how-to-build-online-store-become-boss\/\">grow and run a\n    business<\/a> themselves took some time. \u201cOn a bigger level, the two words that come to mind are\n  \u2018relentlessness\u2019 and \u2018patience.\u2019 Maybe it seems like those traits might be at odds with one another, but really it\u2019s\n  just two sides of the same coin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once Brian realized the potential of We Like L.A., he took a big risk by quitting his day job fairly early into the\n  project, \u201ceven though we were making peanuts on Adsense revenue. For Christina, it took a bit longer,\u201d he says, \u201cbut\n  eventually I convinced her to go all in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the past few years, We Like L.A. has grown enough to become their full-time gig \u2014 and they\u2019ve pulled in others to\n  help out as well. \u201cEvery month we contract local journalists to write stories and cover angles that we wouldn\u2019t be\n  able to do if it were just us, whether it\u2019s reviewing a comedy show, previewing a new pop-up, or offering our readers\n  a unique round-up of to-dos,\u201d Brian says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2966ef81-e51e-416b-bfd9-ea37c6e7e004_dh-welikela-angels-flight.jpg\" alt=\"Angels Flight Railway. Photo by Christina Champlin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Brian focuses mostly on creating the email and working on their videos, while Christina manages the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.welikela.com\/events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">events calendar<\/a>&nbsp;and specializes\n  in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/how-to-start-a-food-blog\/\">covering food and restaurants<\/a>. It\u2019s a true\n  partnership, says Brian, drawing on their complementary strengths to build something readers love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery day we try to move the ball forward by creating new content, telling a new story, or sharing some actionable\n  tips for exploring L.A.,\u201d he says. \u201cThe idea is that if our content helps people engage with their surroundings and\n  try new experiences, and if we do it in a way that\u2019s genuine and true to ourselves, we form a lasting relationship\n  with the audience that strengthens over time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/successful-entrepreneur-traits\/\">Ready To Start an\n    Online Business? 5 Traits of Successful Entrepreneurs<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We Like DreamHost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Brian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/how-to-start-a-blog\/\">built the blog using WordPress<\/a>. He\n  mentioned his website-building to a friend who, lucky for We Like L.A., was a longtime employee at DreamHost. Brian\u2019s\n  friend pointed him to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/wordpress\/managed\/\">DreamPress<\/a>, a new\n  product at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you run a website with a lot of traffic, there are going to be hiccups and hurdles to overcome so you can keep\n  things running smoothly,\u201d Brian says. \u201cThat\u2019s a fact of life. In the few instances when there\u2019s been a server issue, a\n  faulty plugin, or some other site-related issue, I\u2019ve always been impressed by the responsiveness and helpfulness of\n  the DreamHost customer support team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/managed-wordpress-hosting-guide\/\">Managed WordPress<\/a> hosting also\n  gave We Like L.A. an affordable way to provide its audience with a great user experience, including quick loading\n  times. This value of using a product with high performance and low cost helped get the blog off the ground. When a new\n  business starts growing fast from nothing, this kind of service is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are advantages, of course, if we had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/guide-to-dedicated-hosting\/\">dedicated server<\/a>. But those costs would\u2019ve\n  been prohibitive when we were first starting out. I can honestly say that if we didn\u2019t go with DreamHost, We Like L.A.\n  might never have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Good Way to Be<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Amidst the crowded streets and celebrity sightings, L.A.\u2019s claim to fame is the food. \u201cIt\u2019s the best food city in\n  America,\u201d Brian says. His favorite place in L.A. right now is Mercado La Paloma, a food hall just east of the USC\n  campus, on the other side of the 110 freeway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGilberto Cetina Jr. is one of our favorite chefs, and he actually has two spots in the Mercado. One is Chichen Itza,\n  which specializes in cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork \u2014 so good),\u201d Brian says. \u201cThe other spot is a Yucatan seafood\n  restaurant called Holbox. Honestly, you couldn\u2019t go wrong with either one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now, the We Like L.A. duo is getting ready to bring on another full-time employee.
