{"id":3915,"date":"2019-01-22T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.dream.press\/?post_type=customer-spotlight&#038;p=3915"},"modified":"2025-05-06T19:43:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T19:43:13","slug":"india-premier-blogger","status":"publish","type":"customer-spotlight","link":"https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/customer-spotlight\/india-premier-blogger\/","title":{"rendered":"How This DreamHost Customer Became India\u2019s Premier Blogger"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One night after an office party, Naina Redhu and her coworker were staring out a window at Bombay\u2019s city lights, when\n  he asked about her job: \u201cAre you happy doing this for the rest of your life?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That simple question became to be a turning point for Redhu, then 24 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was miserable, commuting three hours each day, being shoved into local trains and cabs,\u201d she says. \u201cMy job\n  description entailed sitting at a desk from 9 to 5, which usually extended to 7 p.m. or longer. I liked my boss and\n  the work, but I didn\u2019t like the commute or sitting on my butt the entire day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the next week, she quit her job as a management consultant trainee \u2014 literally walking out of the office and\n  not turning back \u2014 to pursue her passions and in 2010, launched<a href=\"http:\/\/www.naina.co\/\">&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naina.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Naina.co<\/a>, India\u2019s first luxury and\n  lifestyle blog, using&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/wordpress\/\">DreamHost\u2019s WordPress hosting<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As her audience has grown over the years, so has her scope. Redhu is also a vibrant photographer, which has helped\n  her create a brand storytelling niche in social media\u2019s influencer marketing industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding the career she has created, Redhu says there are no typical days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I have an upcoming photo shoot, I\u2019ll spend 2-3 days prior being a complete nervous wreck, planning and double\n  planning, making lists, and worrying,\u201d says Redhu, who also refers to herself an experience collector. \u201cShoot days are\n  followed by days of edits, and eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/wordpress-blogger-checklist\/\">I\u2019ll make a blog post<\/a> out of a photo\n  series and schedule social media updates along with the blog post.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she doesn\u2019t have a shoot on the horizon, Redhu\u2019s schedule is more relaxed but still organized. She spends those\n  days checking her social accounts, viewing her blog traffic, responding to emails, making phone calls, and running\n  errands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On days when Redhu is traveling for work, things are a little more hectic. And that\u2019s where the variety really pops\n  in, she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some people, such an uncertain life schedule can be bothersome,\u201d she says. \u201cFor me, it\u2019s an adventure \u2014 or at\n  least I pretend that it is. I never know what\u2019s going to happen next!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/how-to-start-a-blog\/\">Start Your Own Blog with This\n    Step-by-Step Guide<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Influencing and Instagramming<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Redhu boasts about 52,000 followers on Instagram&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/naina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(@naina),<\/a>&nbsp;she\u2019s hesitant to label herself an influencer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cInfluence is not something I generate. It is something I earn if the audience trusts and respects me. You command\n    influence, you can\u2019t demand it \u2014 at least not in the long run.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Making decisions quickly, taking risks, and adapting to situations on the fly are a few of the traits Redhu believes\n  people need to survive online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEach person has a circle of influence. You don\u2019t necessarily have to have hundreds of thousands of \u2018followers,\u2019\u201d she\n  says. \u201cYou don\u2019t need to be an extrovert. You don\u2019t need to have great language skills. You don\u2019t need to have a\n  physique like a professional model. And then you have to keep on keeping on. Do your thing, remind yourself why\n  you started doing it in the first place, take a deep breath, and ignore the rest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Redhu says that when she started her Instagram account she initially shared animal and flower photos, but then she\n  noticed other people were posting highly stylized, professional images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome were showcasing their portfolios, and some were showcasing themselves. I immediately got into that as well,\u201d\n  she says. \u201cIt\u2019s a bit simpler for me because the images I normally produce are primarily shown on my blog. My\n  Instagram is an extension of my blog about 90% of the time. Only about 10% of what I post on Instagram is\n  specifically <em>for<\/em> Instagram.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Redhu admits that, like many others, she has a love\/hate relationship with Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDespite how much and how often I share, what I share is not a reflection of my entire life. If someone truly\n  believes that they think they know me, they are severely deluded,\u201d she says. \u201cThere are some who comment on my\n  pictures regularly, and I have actually ended up meeting in real life \u2014 that\u2019s always wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And even with posts seen by thousands of strangers throughout the world, Redhu says she doesn\u2019t feel weird living her\n  life online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have to grudgingly admit that I love sharing my work on Instagram. It\u2019s a micro-photo-blog and gives a bird\u2019s-eye\n  view of what going on in my professional and personal life,\u201d she says. \u201cI try to keep a balance between professionally\n  shot images on the DSLR and personal selfies shot on the smartphone. As with the blog, only about 10% of what you see\n  on my Instagram is paid client work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Redhu has also dabbled in<a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/TheNainaRedhuExperience\"> <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/TheNainaRedhuExperience\">podcasting<\/a> and videos the last few years,\n  sharing more insight into her life three or four times a month. (See her<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vchkVpeJZmQ\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vchkVpeJZmQ\">first video<\/a>, recorded in 2015, here.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want to write another ranty blog post,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI wanted to try a talking head video series and see\n  how it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/how-to-start-podcast-wordpress\/\">translated to a podcast<\/a>&nbsp;and what\n  the response was. Seeing and hearing someone talk is a very different experience from reading what they\u2019ve written.\n  Even though it\u2019s literally me talking into a camera, I feel that connects better with a certain segment of the\n  audience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"article-newsletter article-newsletter--gradient\">\n\n\n\n<form class=\"nwsl-form\" id=\"newsletter_article_single_\" novalidate><div class=\"messages\"><\/div><div class=\"form-group\"><label for=\"input_newsletter_article_single_\"><input type=\"email\"name=\"email\"id=\"input_newsletter_article_single_\"placeholder=\"Enter your email address\"novalidatedisabled=\"disabled\"\/><\/label><button type=\"submit\"class=\"btn btn--brand\"disabled=\"disabled\"><span>Sign Me Up!<\/span><\/button><\/div><\/form><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Journaling her Journeys<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Redhu now shares her life online, she acknowledges that she was quite shy when she was younger \u2014 preferring\n  reading, sketching, and writing. Redhu grew up all over India because her father served in the Indian Armed Forces for\n  more than three decades, which meant picking up and moving every few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my teens, I used to keep a very extensive journal,\u201d she says. \u201cI used to write in it every single day, and by the\n  time I grew out of the journal habit, I had a pile of diaries in my room that stacked up at least halfway to the\n  ceiling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That experience of logging her life (coupled with her time sneaking her dad\u2019s analog camera) could have foreshadowed\n  her present-day career. But the journey itself wasn\u2019t a straight shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/customer-spotlight-college-prep-for-girls\/\">In college<\/a>, she studied\n  commerce and took a computer-programming course, in which she first encountered C++ and the early inklings of HTML.\n  She began her first job as a management consultant trainee in Bombay, Maharashtra, in 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn the side,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/how-to-start-a-wordpress-blog\/\">I had also started to\n    blog<\/a>&nbsp;about the subjects of innovation and creativity, which is what my boss had asked me to research,\u201d she says.\n  \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/19-expert-blogging-tips-for-2019\/\">I started blogging<\/a>&nbsp;because I thought\n  it was a great way to keep track of my research.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/18-expert-blogging-tips-for-2018\/\">The World&#8217;s Best\n    Content Creators Share Their Top Blogging Tips<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Redhu also landed some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/how-to-create-freelance-writer-website\/\">freelance jobs<\/a> as a web and\n  brand designer and started blogging about her sketches and graphic designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEventually, I signed up with DreamHost for my first ever website,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aside.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.aside.in<\/a>&nbsp;in 2005,\u201d she says. \u201cThere I blogged about branding, design, and client\n  case studies for gigs I had successfully or unsuccessfully attempted. I wrote about design trends and shared desktop\n  wallpapers to download.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not long after, Redhu started a separate blog to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/customer-spotlight-2-dads-with-baggage\/\">document her personal travel<\/a>&nbsp;and\n  paintings, which turned into her main blog today,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.naina.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">naina.co<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Giving Photography a Shot<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As Redhu\u2019s freelance jobs were growing, she found herself with another creative opportunity, this time as a\n  photographer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2006, a friend of hers was working on designing and developing a website for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adani.com\/\">&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adani.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The\n    Adani Group<\/a>, one of India\u2019s largest conglomerates. He recommended Redhu as a photographer when the company asked\n  for a reference. Although Redhu got the job \u2014 creating an image bank for a port and jetty \u2014 it came with a few raised\n  eyebrows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cThey were clearly used to a large production crew and lots of photography equipment and, in retrospect, I\n      doubt they had ever hired a woman photographer!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo when I turned up with one assistant (my boyfriend at that time), two cameras (one was a FujiFilm analog camera,\n  and the other was a Sony point-and-shoot), and no lights or tripods, the client\u2019s representative was surprised, if not\n  shocked,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Redhu was confident she could deliver what the company wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI made a verbal deal with them that they only had to pay once they saw the photos and liked what they saw,\u201d she\n  says. \u201cI had already invested some money, but it was a risk I was willing to take. Besides, the client\u2019s\n  representative was a wonderful gentleman who was willing to risk it on me as well!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worst-case scenario, she thought, was that she\u2019d leave with a short vacation with access to a port and jetty that was\n  otherwise not open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI shot a lot and was certain we\u2019d get something useful \u2014 and we did,\u201d she says. \u201cThe client loved<a href=\"http:\/\/www.naina.co\/2010\/06\/mundra-sez\/\">&nbsp;the photographs<\/a>, paid me in full \u2014 barely covering the cost of\n  the film rolls and the negative scanning \u2014 but it was my first paid photography gig! They even got in touch with me\n  again after a few years for another gig.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"749\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/customer-spotlight-naina-3-600x749-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3925\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/customer-spotlight-naina-3-600x749-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/customer-spotlight-naina-3-600x749-1-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/customer-spotlight-naina-3-600x749-1-96x120.jpg 96w, https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/customer-spotlight-naina-3-600x749-1-192x240.jpg 192w, https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/customer-spotlight-naina-3-600x749-1-512x639.jpg 512w, https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/customer-spotlight-naina-3-600x749-1-540x674.jpg 540w, https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/customer-spotlight-naina-3-600x749-1-460x574.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What began as a small opportunity became a passion, and Redhu eventually upgraded her camera equipment as she\n  increased her portfolio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two highlights were photographing a cover for<a href=\"http:\/\/www.naina.co\/2018\/01\/sharmila-tagore-soha-ali-khan-photographed-for-the-htbrunch-likemymother-cover\/\"> <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naina.co\/2018\/01\/sharmila-tagore-soha-ali-khan-photographed-for-the-htbrunch-likemymother-cover\/\">HT\n    Brunch<\/a>, a lifestyle magazine, and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.naina.co\/2017\/09\/sareeonme-wewearculture-photo-project-for-google-arts-culture-googleindia-googlearts-nainaxgoogle\/\"> <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naina.co\/2017\/09\/sareeonme-wewearculture-photo-project-for-google-arts-culture-googleindia-googlearts-nainaxgoogle\/\">collaborating\n    with Google<\/a>, in which she photographed a series of portraits for the company. Redhu was also invited to attend<a href=\"http:\/\/www.naina.co\/2017\/10\/google-fall-launch-san-francisco-2017-nainaxgoogle-teampixel\/\"> <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naina.co\/2017\/10\/google-fall-launch-san-francisco-2017-nainaxgoogle-teampixel\/\">Google\u2019s product\n    launch<\/a> in San Francisco, as one of three people they flew in from India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a big fan of their Pixel line of smartphones, primarily because of their photography capability,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent years have given Redhu plenty of travel opportunities beyond her San Francisco trip. She also visited Vietnam,\n  Singapore, Paris, Hong Kong, and destinations within India, sharing her signature snaps along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teaming with DreamHost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With all the many aspects of Redhu\u2019s career, she needs things to run as smoothly as possible, which is why she\n  uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/\">DreamHost<\/a>. \u201cI need a safe space for my blog that doesn\u2019t bust\n  my bank,\u201d she says. \u201cI want something that just works.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like most small business owners, Redhu says she doesn\u2019t want to worry about things like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/wordpress\/guide-to-manual-wp-install\/\">manual WordPress install<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe one-click install is a <em>huge<\/em> time-saver,\u201d she says. \u201cI have lost count of the number of\n  test-blogs I\u2019ve set up with that. I like the feedback, \u2018Oh hey! I know that place! I see something that I think might look\n  half-decent, and I quickly snap it up,\u201d she explains. \u201cWhen I see the result on the back of the camera, I usually hate\n  it. But over the years, I\u2019ve learned never to delete anything regardless of how much I hate it. Because after I\u2019ve\n  given it some time and then seen it on my laptop, I usually quite like what I have photographed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working on client assignments, however, is a different process. \u201cThere\u2019s usually a clear brief and, in order for me\n  to not get bored, once I\u2019ve sorted out the shots within the brief, I look for something more that I can add \u2014\n  something that\u2019s \u2018me,\u2019\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter the objective, photographing is something Redhu puts her heart and soul into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce I start photographing with a goal in mind, it\u2019s hard for me to stop until I\u2019m completely exhausted,\u201d she says.\n  \u201cThen I look forward to getting the images onto my laptop and then agonize over which set of images tells the story\n  the best. And then I edit. Genuinely, I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m\n  doing,\u201d she says. \u201cBut I\u2019m having fun. I\u2019m excited about tomorrow. I\u2019m itching to produce more photographs and blog\n  more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking pictures for some of the world\u2019s leading luxury brands wasn\u2019t even on her radar when she started her\n  professional journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was pretty broke in the early days of my freelancing career, so if you\u2019d told me that I would be making enough\n  money to support a two-person household in one of the best cities in India, I wouldn\u2019t have believed you,\u201d she says.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest perks, she adds, is the access it provides. \u201cMost people will smile at you if you point your big,\n  fat pro-looking camera at them,\u201d she says. \u201cWhat you do with that is up to you.
