Maybe it\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.checkiday.com\/bc0acba78cf472cc6c414393bcb4518a\/national-german-chocolate-cake-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;National German Chocolate Cake Day<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.checkiday.com\/0b2dd7c42eb7150885bd7085ef9d5fe9\/hug-a-drummer-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;Hug a Drummer Day<\/a>, or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.checkiday.com\/fda7a99ab3f924bfd9a8e22e0d0ef036\/national-selfie-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;National Selfie Day<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 whatever it takes to celebrate things that might be a little\n  out of the ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/easy-social-media-tricks-hard-working-small-business\/\">Social media goes all\n    heart eyes<\/a>&nbsp;for these unique holidays, and with more than 4,000 of them, they need a place to be cataloged.\n  That\u2019s where Westphal\u2019s DreamHost site<a href=\"https:\/\/www.checkiday.com\/\">&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.checkiday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Checkiday.com<\/a>&nbsp;comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Westphal, the lead backend engineer for<a href=\"https:\/\/gravy.live\/\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/gravy.live\/\">Gravy Live Inc<\/a>., launched the site in February 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI loved coming up with ideas for websites and implementing them,\u201d says Westphal, who began teaching himself how to\n  program in elementary school. \u201cI found myself between ideas, and I started asking around. One that seemed simple was a\n  request for a holiday site.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His Google search revealed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/10-holiday-marketing-ideas-website\/\">a\n    handful of websites that listed holidays<\/a>, but Westphal felt they were incomplete and not functional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost of them were just static lists that you had to scroll through to find the correct month or day, and none of\n  them had any searching capabilities,\u201d he recalls. \u201cMy goal was to create the most complete list, make it automatically\n  show you today\u2019s holidays, and make it searchable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within a few weeks the Wisconsin native created Checkiday.com (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160511231854\/http:\/\/www.checkiday.com:80\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">see its first design here<\/a>); although it listed only one or two holidays per calendar\n  date, it won DreamHost Site of the Month the same month it debuted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not a bad accomplishment for a high school senior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"article-newsletter article-newsletter--gradient\">\n\n\n\n<form class=\"nwsl-form\" id=\"newsletter_article_single_\" novalidate><div class=\"messages\"><\/div><div class=\"form-group\"><label for=\"input_newsletter_article_single_\"><input type=\"email\"name=\"email\"id=\"input_newsletter_article_single_\"placeholder=\"Enter your email address\"novalidatedisabled=\"disabled\"\/><\/label><button type=\"submit\"class=\"btn btn--brand\"disabled=\"disabled\"><span>Sign Me Up!<\/span><\/button><\/div><\/form><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calendaring the Days<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Putting together a comprehensive guide for every official and unofficial holiday isn\u2019t for the faint of heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt first I scoured the internet for every holiday list I could find. Since my goal was to make the most complete\n  holiday website on the planet, I didn\u2019t want to miss any,\u201d Westphal says. \u201cI carefully verified the legitimacy of each\n  holiday and found when it was celebrated. Every single holiday on Checkiday has been thoroughly researched by at least\n  one human researcher.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a never-ending project for Westphal, who graduated in software engineering and mathematics from the University\n  of Wisconsin-Platteville in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, most of the holiday additions are a result of people informing us of missing holidays or new ones that have\n  been created,\u201d he says. \u201cWe are the most complete site out there. We have over\n  4,200 <em>unique<\/em> holidays, and that number is still growing steadily.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even though Checkiday has the largest quantity of holidays, Westphal also strives to have the highest quality.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re one o<\/em><em>f the only holiday sites on the internet that invested the time to research each\n      individual holiday,\u201d he says. \u201cWe are constantly adding to the amount of data that we expose via our site,\n      including some of our sources, the pattern used to determine when the holiday is celebrated, who founded the\n      holiday, when it was first celebrated, alternate names, hashtags, etc.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the information, Checkiday also includes holiday descriptions and information on how to celebrate\n  them. \u201cWe\u2019ve currently done this for over 700 holidays \u2014 more holidays than some sites have total,\u201d Westphal says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Checkiday is also the only major holiday website that allows lookup of any date in the past or future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll of our holidays are represented programmatically with respect to when they are celebrated. There are tons\n  of patterns we capture, like static dates (Christmas), the first Tuesday of July, five days after Easter, or the first\n  day of Spring, just to name a few. It now has pictures, descriptions, and more information about each\n  holiday. (Read Checkiday\u2019s info on how to start your own holiday<a href=\"https:\/\/www.checkiday.com\/help.php\">&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.checkiday.com\/help.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne thing I wish people knew is that there is no particular authority when it comes to holidays, no matter what\n  people claim,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve seen countless people pay thousands of dollars for a holiday proclamation, which they\n  could have done more effectively on their own without lining someone\u2019s pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each day averages about 10 holidays on Checkiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople often ask us why there are multiple donut days, bacon days, etc. I wish people would do proper research\n  before declaring new holidays; in many cases, the effort could be put toward promoting a day that already exists,\u201d\n  Westphal explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He continues, \u201cIf I had to create a holiday, it would be one along the lines of increasing awareness of existing\n  \u2018unofficial\u2019 holidays. Many people have no idea of the abundance of holidays that exists, and it would be great to\n  increase awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Checkiday also lists many international holidays and is working to make that aspect more complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile the U.S. is our main focus for now, we hope to expand to other countries in the future,\u201d Westphal says.\n  \u201cIdeally, we would detect a user\u2019s location and only show relevant holidays. I have also been impressed by how much technical knowledge the live help staff has. I think in this\n  particular encounter, the person I first talked with was able to resolve my issue by reordering the certificates\n  within a few minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Westphal also notes that the customer portal really sets DreamHost apart from the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany other vendors use the same cPanel, but DreamHost has a custom panel. Although it wasn\u2019t a deciding factor when\n  choosing DreamHost initially, I really like how its panel is laid out and functions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Westphal says he appreciates that DreamHost takes care of a lot of the tedious maintenance of a website, while still\n  leaving customers with a powerful and flexible environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a huge fan of the self-renewing<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/hosting\/ssl-tls-certificates\/\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/hosting\/ssl-tls-certificates\/\">Let\u2019s Encrypt certificates<\/a>. It makes my life a\n  lot easier by removing the need to renew and replace certificates. Even when buying a certificate through DreamHost,\n  they install it automatically,\u201d he says. \u201cI also love how any domain purchased and hosted via DreamHost automatically\n  takes care of <a href=\"https:\/\/help.dreamhost.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/215413857-DreamHost-DNS-overview\">DNS\n    settings<\/a> for you; both basic DNS in addition to custom www redirect settings. For both shared hosting and\n  on my VPS, I love the fact that I have shell access.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From an engineering standpoint, Westphal says there are a lot of great features. \u201cAlthough this is not specific to\n  DreamHost, I love the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/beginners-guide-vps\/\">managed VPS product<\/a>,\u201d he\n  says. \u201cI never have to worry about PHP updates or security patches, I just have to write my code and it works!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">At the End of the Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Westphal says that, as a kid, he always loved Christmas, especially because of the time he spent with his family.\n  \u201cOne of my favorite holiday memories is sitting on the floor of my grandparents\u2019 house with my siblings and cousins.\n  The adults sat on the perimeter, and we would take turns opening the presents from underneath the tree,\u201d he says. \u201cMy\n  grandpa loved putting bricks in gifts to throw people off when they tried to guess what a package might contain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t need to be Christmas every day. In Checkiday\u2019s world, nostalgia, novelty, and downright silliness can\n  belong to any day.
