There\u2019s a photo Michelle Jamieson can\u2019t forget. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A dog living in a crate. Not resting. Living.

\u201cI\u2019ll never get that picture out of my head,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That dog is safe now\u2014out in the woods, nose down, chasing smells\u2014but the image stuck for a different reason. It wasn\u2019t unusual. It was familiar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the work Cross Our Paws Rescue<\/a> steps into every day, supporting animals across the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Not the polished moments people share, but the messy ones in between\u2014when a dog won\u2019t make eye contact, or a cat stays tucked into the back of a carrier, unsure if it\u2019s safe to come out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for a long time, telling that story online was the hardest part. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Work Was There. The Visibility Wasn\u2019t.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jamieson didn\u2019t plan to run a rescue.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After her dog Iris died, everything felt off. Quiet in the wrong way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was completely lost,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She started fostering, then volunteering, and stayed with it. For years, she worked alongside Bonnie Graham, one of the rescue\u2019s original founders, learning intake, placement, and how to make the kind of calls that don\u2019t come with instructions. 

Then Bonnie got sick. And then she was gone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know what to do, I lost a best friend and a work partner,\u201d Jamieson says.

For a while, things stalled. But the messages didn\u2019t stop, and neither did the need. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogs, cats, the occasional \u201ccan you help with the one too?\u201d It all kept coming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So Jamieson stepped in, taking on the executive director role and figuring it out as she went. There is a network of amazing support in the rescue world, she just needed to reach out and they were there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rebuilding Without a Blueprint <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The next problem showed up fast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was no website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old was gone. What was left lived across Facebook posts, Instagram updates, and email threads that never quite lined up. Everything landed in her inbox. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople would ask, \u2018Where\u2019s your website? How do I apply?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was answering the same things over and over, trying to keep up while animals still needed placement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was emailing constantly,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s just me right now. I thought, I can\u2019t keep working like this.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A website, to her, wasn\u2019t about looking official. It was about trust and accessibility, and finally having a place to show what Cross Our Paws stands for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From \u201cI Can\u2019t\u201d to \u201cI Can Actually Do This\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hiring someone to build the site was unrealistic and daunting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would have to pay somebody thousands of dollars,\u201d she says. \u201cEvery penny we get goes to the animals.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She tried building something herself on another platform. It didn\u2019t stick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she came back to WordPress through DreamHost (and because her friend Bonnie liked WordPress)\u2014and found Remixer<\/a>, DreamHost\u2019s conversational AI website builder. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was so easy, and everything I did came out looking so professional,” she says. \u201cI was talking to it like a human.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She could describe what she wanted in plain language: changing layouts, swapping images, and adjusting structure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somewhere along the way, something shifted. She started picking up a whole new vocabulary\u2014headers, layouts, structure\u2014things she\u2019d never needed before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was thinking\u2026 wow, I can actually do this.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Building it Herself (For Real This Time)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What started as a task turned into something more hands-on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would just try things,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colors, layouts, images. If she could picture it, she could test it. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn\u2019t. Either way, she kept going. And for the first time, she wasn\u2019t explaining her vision to someone else and hoping it came back right. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith this, it\u2019s your version, your vision,\u201d Jamieson says. \u201cNot somebody else\u2019s interpretation of what you want.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That changed everything including how she saw what she could still learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI Was Having a Blast\u201d <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s not something you hear every day from someone building their first website at 63. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think I would have that much fun,\u201d she says. \u201cI was having a blast.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of that came from the freedom to experiment. To try something, break it, fix it, and keep going. It wasn\u2019t perfect, but it felt like real progress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Difference Real Support Makes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t treat me like I didn\u2019t know anything,\u201d Jamieson says. \u201cThere was immense patience and it was like, \u2018OK, let\u2019s try this, we\u2019ve got you.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DreamHost Remixer team did more than answering questions. They got in there with her, walking through issues, troubleshooting, and figuring things out side by side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI could not have done it without them,\u201d she says. \u201cYou don\u2019t know what you don\u2019t know.\u201d

Because this wasn\u2019t just a website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour website is your face to the world. It\u2019s who you are in your community, it\u2019s how adopters feel trust and how owners can call you when they need support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Site That Actually Works<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When the site went live, the feeling went beyond relief. It stuck.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was so proud of it. It really represents Cross Our Paws Rescue,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s so interactive.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It works the way she needed it to. There\u2019s a learning section with trusted resources, a legacy page honoring Bonnie, and a space for stories, supporters, and the people behind the work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jamieson also saw it as a chance to show what Cross Our Paws Rescue stands for through the photos and stories that reflect care that\u2019s patient, intentional, and built around what each animal actually needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there are the fillable on-line forms\u2014which changed everything. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI felt like I was coming out of the paper era and into something so much easier, for me and our adopters,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Changed Day to Day <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before, everything was manual: back-and-forth emails, missing details, delays.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, when someone reaches out, the information is already there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am able to act quicker and provide support right away,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In one case, a surrender request<\/a> came through, and within days, the dog was in care. A week later, she was sleeping somewhere that wasn\u2019t a crate. There was no chasing information. No waiting. Just faster decisions and better outcomes for animals that don\u2019t have time to spare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

More Than a Website<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before, Cross Our Paws Rescue lived across social platforms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now it has a home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A place where people can understand what the rescue stands for and how it works before they ever reach out. A place to show the side of rescue people don\u2019t always see: the quieter moments where animals settle in, feel safe, and start to trust again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThrough your website, you have the ability to really tell your story,\u201d Jamieson says. \u201cTo showcase who you are.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in rescue work, that matters. Trust comes first. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Comes Next<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jamieson is focused on growing with intention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her current priorities include education, community building, and helping people better understand positive training, nutrition, and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust opening people up to learning and new ideas,\u201d she says. \u201cBringing people together to start to have more in-depth conversations about how we better support our animals. I hope they can see that through our website.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing the right way takes time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Build What Matters (Without the Extra Friction) <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Turns out, building a website doesn\u2019t have to feel like applying for a second job you didn\u2019t ask for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every organization starts with a plan, a budget, or technical experience. Sometimes it starts with a loss you didn\u2019t expect and a problem you can\u2019t ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Jamieson, building a website felt like one more thing to figure out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until it became something she owned.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
