No?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It. Was. <strong>Awesome.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Privacy Matters in Europe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Belgium\u2019s Guy Verhofstadt, my new favorite person in the world, asked honest and tough questions that ultimately\n  never got answered. But you can <em>clearly<\/em> see the fire in his eyes and the passion in his voice for\n  protecting internet users\u2019 personal data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"WATCH: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testifies before the European Union Parliament\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y70LrlzrkNk?start=1543&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>How can you not love this man? Throughout the entire hearing, I wanted to high-five and hug him all at the same time!\n  And then I\u2019d treat him to a fine steak dinner and we\u2019d be friends forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike the countless (and clueless) softballs thrown by some members of our own Congress back in April, members of\n  the European Parliament pulled no punches. They asked educated, pointed questions and made absolutely clear that the\n  safety of user data was paramount among their concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/kapow-1601675_640-300x225-1.png\" alt=\"Kapow!\" class=\"wp-image-3470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/kapow-1601675_640-300x225-1.png 300w, https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/kapow-1601675_640-300x225-1-96x72.png 96w, https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/kapow-1601675_640-300x225-1-192x144.png 192w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Facebook may have been the subject of this hearing, but Europe\u2019s support of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/history-of-internet-privacy\/\">internet user privacy<\/a>, and indeed the\n  very <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Right_to_be_forgotten\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">right to be forgotten<\/a>, has been a recurring theme in their quest to help EU members\n  have a say in how their personal information is used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Privacy issues often take center stage in Europe, and nowhere is that more evident than in the many, many pages of\n  the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, which takes effect <em>today<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/history-of-internet-privacy\/\">The History of\n    Internet Privacy<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GDPR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Debated for four years and ultimately passed in 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/what-to-know-about-gdpr-data-security\/\">the GDPR<\/a> is groundbreaking\n  regulation created to give EU citizens full control over their personal data on a modern internet that often seeks to\n  monetize and exploit that very same data at every opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GDPR gives <em>legal rights<\/em> to people whose personal data is collected and used by online\n  businesses and other groups. It even imposes penalties against these service providers for misused or mishandled\n  personal information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can read the full text of the order at <a href=\"https:\/\/gdpr-info.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gdpr-info.eu<\/a>. Maybe their Privacy Policy was already in pretty good shape and only needed\n  to have more explicit detail added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, we\u2019ve updated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/legal\/privacy-policy\/\">our own privacy\n    policy<\/a> to <em>even more explicitly<\/em> call out our data collection and usage policies. We did\n  this happily, gleefully, and with the utmost respect for your personal data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have noticed we made a conscious decision to not spam you about it, too. You\u2019re welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NEW: Privacy Center<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/switches-923072_640-300x200-1.jpg\" alt=\"Switches\" class=\"wp-image-3479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/switches-923072_640-300x200-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/switches-923072_640-300x200-1-96x64.jpg 96w, https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/switches-923072_640-300x200-1-192x128.jpg 192w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>All current DreamHost users now have access to a new section of their control panel that we\u2019re calling\n  the <strong>Privacy Center<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of today, you\u2019ll be able to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/panel.dreamhost.com\/index.cgi?tree=billing.privacy\">Privacy Center<\/a> to set your DreamHost\n  email contact preferences. We\u2019re working to add even more functionality to it in the future \u2013 not strictly required by\n  the GDPR \u2013 allowing you to specify your preferences for even more control of your personal information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of our Privacy Center is for you to be able to control as much of your personal information as possible all\n  in <strong>one<\/strong> place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/help.dreamhost.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/115001898171-Updating-your-contact-information-and-privacy-settings\">How\n    to Update Your Contact Information and Privacy Settings<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Internal Process Changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How we handle data behind the scenes has changed a bit as well. Without boring you too much, I can say that we\u2019re\n  GDPR compliant \u201cback of house\u201d as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, we now delete web server log files after 72 hours and will soon be encrypting them altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Domain Registration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing is changing about our free WHOIS Privacy Protection. If you\u2019re currently masking your domain registration\n  details using <a href=\"https:\/\/help.dreamhost.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/216458407-Enabling-WHOIS-privacy-settings\">our privacy\n    settings<\/a>, those settings will remain in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enom, our domain registration partner, has implemented their own implementation of GDPR\u2019s rules: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enom.com\/blog\/will-gdpr-impact-whois\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a gated WHOIS\n    system<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/see-1020175_640-e1527195839893-300x204-1.jpg\" alt=\"Don't speak, see, hear\" class=\"wp-image-3481\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/see-1020175_640-e1527195839893-300x204-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/see-1020175_640-e1527195839893-300x204-1-96x65.jpg 96w, https:\/\/news.dream.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/see-1020175_640-e1527195839893-300x204-1-192x131.jpg 192w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Until ICANN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/icann-makes-last-minute-whois-changes-to-address-gdpr-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pulls its head out of its ass<\/a> and enacts permanent rule changes\n  rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/icann-makes-last-minute-whois-changes-to-address-gdpr-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">panicked last-minute stopgap measures<\/a>, we believe that Enom\u2019s approach\n  is probably the best way to handle things for the time being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/what-is-domain-privacy-protection\/\">What Is\n    Domain Privacy Protection?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Europe Only?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>GDPR is a European regulation, so if you\u2019re in the U.S., you shouldn\u2019t have to care about any of this, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wrong. Any online organization that provides service to EU members, regardless of where in the world it may be\n  located, is required to treat those members in accordance with the GDPR regulations. That means that GDPR\u2019s ultimate\n  implementation is likely to have some impact on nearly every internet user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We believe that GDPR represents an advance in the rights of all internet users, and we\u2019ll be applying all of these\n  changes to our entire user base \u2014 not just those users located in the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The GDPR represents a giant step forward in protecting the personal information of anyone who has ever typed their\n  name or email address into an internet-connected computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DreamHost\u2019s vision statement is, and has been, very simple: \u201cPeople have the freedom to choose how their digital\n  content is shared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally identifiable information falls under that umbrella, and we\u2019re thankful to \u2014 and grateful for \u2014 a\n  European Parliament that has seen fit to bring this same sentiment to the global stage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did you happen to catch Mark Zuckerberg getting reamed this week by members of the European Parliament as he dodged one question after another in one of the most bizarre interview formats of all time?
