Zapata\u2019s first few months weren\u2019t easy and she doesn\u2019t try to pretend otherwise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI started trying to survive,\u201d Zapata said. \u201cI didn\u2019t understand a thing.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She quickly found out there\u2019s no warm-up period in support. Customers show up with real problems, and you\u2019re thrust into it whether you feel ready or not. Zapata had to build context as she went, often already mid-situation, figuring things out on the fly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was overwhelming at times, and frustrating at others, but she kept going. Zapata watched how her teammates approached problems, asked questions even when she felt behind, and kept pushing through the moments where nothing made sense. Over time, things started to click. <\/p>\n\n\n\n At that point, Zapata wasn\u2019t thinking about what came next. If anything, she felt like she still had more to learn in her role as a technical support rep. Her managers, however, had a different take. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey made a profile for me, and said, \u2018You would be good doing something else.\u2019\u201d Zapata hesitated. She thought moving into a new role meant starting over again, and she wasn\u2019t sure she was ready. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The response she got back stuck with her: you don\u2019t wait until you know everything. You learn by doing. So, she said yes. That feeling didn\u2019t turn out to be a warning. It was all part of the process, one challenging step at a time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Ask Zapata what helped her grow at DreamHost, and she won\u2019t point to a single tool or training program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n It comes back to the people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIf you want to learn, people will show you,\u201d she said. \u201cHere, they will teach you, and they will be patient.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n She describes an environment where managers and team leads actively look for potential and push people forward, even when those people aren\u2019t fully convinced themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n She\u2019s also seen that same support reflected in the number of strong women across the company. \u201cI haven\u2019t seen any of the women here struggling,\u201d Zapata said. \u201cThey are doing it better than anyone else.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n In a field often seen as male-dominated, her experience at DreamHost has been different\u2014open, collaborative, and grounded in sharing knowledge rather than competing for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As a Technical Support Project Coordinator, Zapata works between teams, bridging the gap between development and support. When something changes behind the scenes, whether it\u2019s server upgrades, infrastructure shifts, and product updates, her job is to make sure the support team isn\u2019t caught off guard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe need to make sure decisions don\u2019t create problems for support,\u201d Zapata said. \u201cOr at least make sure they\u2019re prepared.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n That usually means documentation, internal guidance, and a lot of coordination.
